About Stillness Through Movement

 

Stillness Through Movement (STM) consists of supported poses, breath awareness techniques, meditation (training the mind in openness and kindness) and vibrational medicine. This combination helps you to restore your body/mind connection allowing you to align with your own true nature: consciousness. It is ideal for both men and women to help balance mental, emotional and physical well being. To do this, we work with breath and mind awareness, so you're able to deeply let go, allowing your body and mind to receive the benefits of the restorative poses, bringing the body/mind back to its natural state of peace and contentment. Without this awareness, one lives in a permanent state of unease. But, when you practise the STM way, you begin to align with the natural flow of life.

Using aromatherapy and flower/shell essences for support, you're able to relax and let go with more ease. The parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) is activated during the STM practice. The PSNS is responsible for balancing the body and bringing its response system back into equilibrium. STM takes the spine and nervous system out of the “flight, fight or freeze’ response, relaxing and calming the adrenal glands.

To assist this process, props and heavy weighted blankets are used to support the body, ensuring no strain occurs and the body can deeply relax. Some poses target a specific area, while others have a general, overall benefit. Postures can be held anywhere from two up to 30 minutes, and as we do this, we are sending gentle messages to the body to relax and move toward balance.

This gentle, restorative practice is especially beneficial when you may be feeling fatigued, overwhelmed, anxious or stressed from day to day activities, as well as during major life transitions (such as death of a loved one, change of job, pregnancy, fertility, hormonal changes, marriage, new baby, children leaving home, divorce or adrenal burnout). All of the poses we use create specific physiological responses which are beneficial to health and can reduce the effects of these stress related conditions as well as assist recovery from illness or injury. 

Over the years, I have witnessed the effects that STM can have in re-balancing hormones in women who have PMS/PMD, those going through puberty, menstruation and menopause, and for men with hormonal imbalances as well.

What’s so unique about STM Therapy is that you need no prior experience, as the practice will meet you exactly where you're at on any given day and guide you where you need to go!

STM Therapy is practised both on the floor and on massage tables, depending on the style of class being offered. When the focus is on energy medicine, we use the tables and when we are working more with the STM postures, including the breath and gentle strokes and holds, we work more from the floor.

Personally, I have had major events that have happened in my own life and without this practice I would have been truly lost. I have found this practice to be the most supportive tool for today's modern society, where stress is unfortunately a daily part of our lives as humans.
